A recent blog by Granddaughter Jessica Clark about Charger “stuff” opened the floodgates of nostalgia for that once-charming little sailor town called San Diego. Without going into a lengthy epistle, allow me to just blurt out the fantastic memories I have of that time and place…
Balboa Park.
The Coronado Ferry moving across sparkling, sun-washed waters.
…and, of course, the “Nickel Snatcher!”
Hotel Del.
Palm trees growing in harmony with Pine trees.
The wonderful fragrance of Eucalyptus trees.
Free & easy parking at easily accessible sandy beaches –on the bay or on the coast.
Possibly the very best dog beaches in the whole world!
The Zoo!
Balboa Stadium. David and I attending Charger games -every home game in 1963!
Fillipi’s Pizza.
The best Mexican food north of the border.
Chula Vista and National City…what in the world are these?
Point Loma and the light house.
Trips to the desert & mountains –heat, snow, and a mild, sunny seashore all in one day!
Mount Soledad and Mount Helix.
That tiny town north of us –Escondido. Hard to get to because of a little 2-lane road.
The city with the best freeway system in my experience, now has become a major US City with major traffic problems –still with beautiful beaches but which are now nearly impossible to access.
But we’ll always love you San Diego.
We have no living relatives there now. But we still have some dear friends that will always welcome us back –if only for a visit.
So,
Go Chargers! (and take the Padres with you)

Allow me to add...
Our first Christmas in San Diego. Swimming in the pool, remembering the White Christmases in New York.
Mt. Soledad and Mt. Helix, the best spots for gazing at sparkling city lights.
Home of the original Jack-in-the-Box. I still remember the drive-through; literally THROUGH the building!
Freeway 805's opening day in the early '70's. They allowed bicycles on it in celebration, not taking into account the steep grade over Freeway 80. Multitudes of crashes. Some engineer lost his head on that one!
The San Diego Zoo! Seemed like we went there at least once a month. Didn't appreciate it then; would love to have that privilege now.
Bicycling on my orange Schwinn from San Diego State to La Jolla, body surfing all day, then somehow bicycling home. Ah-h-h-h, youth!
Wonderful memories!
About 5 years ago my dad took our family to San Diego and toured us around. He showed us places he lived, hung out, the zoo, and even a school he went to where he tormented the nuns! It would be fun to visit San Diego again sometime!
Why did I leave?????? Oh yeah, family. Can I ask why my family didn't come to me? LOL I miss my friends, the weather..and the freeways! AND THE MEXICAN FOOD. Very true what Judi said, you don't appreciate it when you have it!
Oh yeah! And how about those car trips to TiJuana?!? Coming back across the border with baby blankets draped across bottles of hooch cradled in mom's arms...was that legal?
Of course, that meant nothing to us little tykes, but later the cherry bombs and M-80's did!
(Identity kept anonymous to protect the innocent!!)
By simple process of elimination, we know who anonymous is...and, we know where you live!
Why anonymous?
Just for fun!
Besides, what if the "Feds" are reading this?!
;-)
Ditto.... I would like to add my own memories, but I think it's pretty much been covered!
I'm not sure how someone starts out in San Diego, ventures to God's Country, Seattle, and then ends up in Joyzee!!! ;-)
To 3PIP:
Actually, you started out in Utica, NY, so you may just be working your way back...
I can see San Diego, but...is there any sane reason to end up back in Utica?
